It is funny how shoe attire is often a cultural giveaway. Here are two things that come to mind about shoes...

I used to sit at a café in a popular tourist location with a friend, and we would look at people from a distance and try to guess their nationalities.  Between the two of us we spoke a dozen languages.  So we would make our guesses and wait for the people to walk past and listen to the language they spoke to confirm their nationality.  Shoes often gave people away.

When I first came to Paris, one of my favorite stores was in an area with a high concentration of pickpockets.  After a while it was easy to see which people to avoid.  They would always look at the shoes you were wearing.
